History of Amaravati Archaeological Museum
Hundreds of years of relics exist at the Amaravati Archaeological Museum, uncovered through intensive excavations. Part of this collection is the history that can be discerned in the collection, in particular a history dating from the 3rd Century BCE and even sculptures forming the Mahachaitya, or the Giant Stupa.
The site was explored by Colonel Mackenzie in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, which work from which archaeological work like that of outstanding figures like Smith and Elliot (1985), Sewell (1877), James Burgess (1881), and Alexander Rea (1888-89, 1905-06, 08-09) were motivated during excavation of several sculptural remains.
Further excavations in the post-independence era by Subramaniyam and Krishnamurthy, 1958-59, Karthikeya Sharma, 1974-75, and Venkataramayya and Raghavachary, 1962-65 at Amaravati and Dharanikota only deepened our understanding of the architectural and historical value of both the Mahachaitya and the Dharanikota citadel.
