History of Agra Fort

Agra Fort has a rich history with the original establishment, led by Rajput rulers. The end of the First Battle of Panipat (1526) resulted in Ibrahim Lodhi shifting to this fort. Later, the Mughal King Babur took over the fort. In 1565, its reconstruction started and was completed in 1573, became the main residence of Akbar. During the ruling years of kings Jahangir and Shahjahan, It witnessed modifications and remained the main point of ruling until 1638 when Delhi became the capital of India. 

In 1658, Aurangzeb, the son of Shahjahan took on the reign and kept his father there until his death time. This location has been the prime spot of various battles, assimilating the history of the rise and fall of many Mughal rulers. After the Mughals, many other kings owned it and in 1803, it got in the hands of the British. In 1947, when India gained independence, its ownership was imparted to the Government of India. In 1983, it was recognized as a Heritage Site by UNESCO.
