About Daulatabad Fort, Aurangabad

Daulatabad Fort is a citadel with defenses such as a moat, glacis, and grandiose walls. It was constructed by the Yadava Dynasty in the 12th century.  The narrow bridge and gallery offer easy accessibility to the fort. Created as a safety net from invaders, it has the shape of a tortoise’s back. Over the years, it has been controlled by many rulers, such as the Khilji dynasty, the Tughlaq dynasty, the Bahamani Sultans and the Mughals. For reaching the top, dark and curvy staircases were used, which served as a defense strategy to baffle the intruders. Moreover, there is Hathi Haud, a water tank with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters, granaries, water cisterns, and archaic wells in the complex of the fort. 

History of Daulatabad Fort, Aurangabad

The origin of Daulatabad Fort dates back to 1187 AD when it was built by Bhillama V, the first Yadava king. Moreover, he created the township and designated Deogiri, referred to as the Hill of the Gods, the capital of his kingdom. It remained the capital till 1296 AD and was later captured by the kings ruling the Deccan.

In 1308, when Sultan Alauddin Khalji became the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, he took control of the fort. In 1327, Muhammad Bin Tughluq took the reigns over it and rechristened it Daulatabad. For a short duration, he relocated his capital from Delhi to Daulatabad and in 1334, restored his capital to the Delhi region. Later,  Bahmanis took hold of the fort and created multiple structures like Chand Minar and others. In 1499, Ahmednagar Nizam Shahis seized control and took steps to strengthen it. Later, in the 17th century, it was administered by the Mughals and then over the years, to other rulers such as Marathas, Peshwas, and the Nizams of Hyderabad who took hold of it until India got freedom.

Sprawling over an area of 94 hectares, the Daulatabad Fort Complex possesses architectural brilliance with sections such as Ambarkot, Mahakot, Kalakot, and Balako.

There are various edifices adorn the site such as palaces, community halls,  step wells, temples, mosques, reservoirs, court buildings, huge tanks, royal baths, a victory tower, a water management system, cannons, and rock-cut caves.

During the early era, it had a robust defense system made of a wet moat, a dry moat, a glacis, and three walls with bastions and gates. The narrow bridge in the fort allows only 2 persons to walk at a time. Moreover, there is a rock-cut tunnel, including the iron spikes, and gun-turrets at the gate are also part of defensive mechanisms.

  • Baradari: It is a sumptuous structure, occupying 13 halls. In the 17th century, it served as a royal palace.
