History of Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi

Humayun’s Tomb’s construction began with the first wife of Humayun, Begum Bega, also known as Haji Begum, honoring the king Humayun. Her death in 1556 caused a halt in the establishment until 1565 when construction started again and was completed in 1572 along with Charbagh Garden. The cost to construct this place was 1.5 million rupees.

Over time, proper maintenance, and care were not given to the place. However, as the British regime got authority in Delhi, they layered the Charbagh Garden in English style. It was the early 20th century when the then-viceroy Lord Curzon authorized the tomb with the original gardens. During India’s partition in 1947, it was used as a refugee camp for Migrants from Pakistan and served as the campsite for over 5 years, resulting in marring the main structure and the surrounding gardens. Later, the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) got hold of its authorization and maintenance.

Humayun’s Tomb Architecture

For the design of the Tomb complex, Begum has selected the Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, an architect based in Persia. It boasts spectacular architecture with Indian and Persian-styled elements embedded in it. made of red sandstone and white marble, it is 154 feet in height and 299 feet in width. Its walls have 124 chambers and the complex has two entry points, one on the south and the second on the west. Besides, Charbagh Garden is styled in the Persian garden with a quadrilateral layout.
