About Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur

Formerly known as  Sudarshangarh, Nahargarh Fort was established in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Later, it was rechristened as Nahargarh, which meant the “abode of tigers”.
It is said it was renamed Nahargarh because it was once home to a considerable population of tigers. In addition to this, some historians attributed it to the fact that its namesake was given to the Rajput kings who fought and proved their bravery and sturdiness like a tiger.

The walk through the gateways of the fort will reveal the intricate inscriptions and carvings embellishing the walls of the fort. Once serving as the three-point defense structure of the city, housing the Amer Fort and the Jaigarh Fort, today it remains an impressive historical monument exemplifying the heritage and historical treasures of Jaipur.

In 1734, Nahargarh Fort was constructed by Sawai Jai Singh II, the then Jaipur Maharaja. It was created as the source of hunting retreat for its family members. Originally, it was named Sudarshangarh and later, renamed Nahargarh. As per the locals, the fort establishment disrespected the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia, the prince of Rathore. Following this, to offer peace to his spirit, a temple was constructed and the name was changed in his honor.

One of the exclusive facts of this site is it never experienced any attack in all of its history and is marked by various significant happenings such as the signing of truces with the Maratha armies (18th century) etc.

In 1857, during India’s first rebellion for freedom, the Jaipur king shifted the Europeans to the fort.  It was revamped and restored by Jaipur king Sawai Ram Singh in 1868 and from 1883 to 1892, many palaces were associated with the fort with the cost of 3, 50,000 rupees. Besides, it was used as a place to fire a gunshot by the Jaipur State government till 1944 as a time signal.
