History of Akbar Tomb
During his life period, Akbar watched over the construction of the tomb, and after his death, his son Jahangir took over the reign and led the completion of construction from 1605-1613. During the rule of Aurangzeb, the tomb gradually dampened, followed by the revolt of the Jaat community against Aurangzeb. In that uprising, not only was the tomb structure harmed but invaluable jewelry was stolen. Further, Akbar’s bones were burned and cremated, strictly prohibited in the Islamic religion. Later, in the early 1900s, it was restored by the Lorn Curzon, British Indian Vicery. Under his authority, many other historical sites were reinstated under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act.
