Due to not comprising any inscriptions, precise information about Aurangabad Caves history is not available. However, as per the historical records, these caves were grounded during the  Buddhist dynasties. At that time, viharas were created as shelters for monks, and the chaitya halls and stupas were formed for religious purposes and belong to the 6th and 7th centuries. References about these caves are taken from the Kanheri Caves, a separate clump of rock-cut caves, located in Maharashtra. Additionally, 1st millennium CE Buddhist artwork such as Ganesha and Durga sculptures can be witnessed in this place.
