During his rule, he built five observatories in the early 18th century, in which remaining four observatories are located in Jaipur, Varanasi, Ujjain, and Mathura. It was established to collect the astronomical tables and to make predictions related to the planet’s movements, moon, and sun. During that time it was considered an impressive structure however, later in 1867, it underwent destruction. Gradually,  it was revived after the Indian Government took hold of it, and then served as a famous tourist place in Delhi.

Jantar Mantar Delhi Architecture

Jantar Mantar Delhi includes many astronomical structures and instruments, created using brick, stone, and other materials. As an outdoor observatory, the installation of instruments is done in the open instead of within buildings or rooms. With consistent data calculation and collection, it became active for 7 years but over time, as tall buildings got built around it, it doesn’t provide correct observations now.

Jantar Mantar Complex Instruments and structures

Among the thirteen architectural astronomy instruments of this site, Ram Yantra, Mishra Yantra, Samrat Yantra, and Jai Prakash Yantra are the most popular. Maharaja Jai Singh II created the majority of these instruments.

  • Samrat Yantra: Samrat Yantra is considered as the main Instrument, inside the observatory. It is 70 feet high, 114 feet long at the base, and 10 feet thick. Its shape is a triangle and has a hypotenuse of 128 feet in length, standing parallel to the Earth’s access and facing towards the north pole. There is a quadrant on each side of a triangle with graduations that signify the seconds, minutes, and hours.
  • Jayaprakash Yantra: This instrument has structures, that replicate hollow hemispheres exhibited on their concave surfaces. To set the sun and stars’ position in the sky, Jayaprakash Yantra was used.
  • Rama Yantra: Rama Yantra contains two massive structures that have cylindrical shapes and open tops, measuring the star’s altitude depending upon the earth’s longitude and latitude.
  • Misra Yantra: It includes five instruments, Dakshinottara Bhitti, Samrat, Niyat Chakra, Karka Rasivalaya, and the Western Quadrant. They are used to discover the longest and the shortest days in a year. Through Misra Yantra, the precise noon time can be known.
