Nagarjunakonda Archaeological Museum Location

History of Archaeological Museum, Nagarjunakonda

In the 1920s, during colonial rule, Nagarjunakonda was a notable site for archaeologists. This location is popular for archaeological excavations and research. Over time, various projects were organized, involving the preservation of Buddhist sculptures and monuments redeemed by Mahayana Buddhists. In 1939, British archaeologist, Leonard Woolley, expressed his apprehensions about preserving sculptures at this location as the place was not connected effectively to the main city, thus prsenting hurdles for the public to gain access.

In 1944, Mortimer Wheeler, ASI director general, gave suggestions around the relocation of sculptures to the Indian Museum, Calcutta, or to the Government Museum, Madras. Following this, some sculptures were transferred, however, research was continued in the location.

In 1960, due to the Nagarjuna Sagar dam,  Calamity put artifacts in danger of being submerged. Following this, antiques were shifted to higher land on the hill, and in 1966, a museum was constructed in the island town of a medieval fort with the Style of Buddhist Viharas, showcasing the Buddhist, Palaeolithic, and Neolithic artifacts and ruins, found during the excavations.
