History of Undavalli Caves

Undavalli Caves with four stories are believed to have been discovered in the 7th century. Connected with the Vishnukundin rulers(AD 420 – 620), these caves are devoted to the Anantapadmanabha and Narisimhaswami. Earlier, in 420 AD-620 AD, these caves were captured by the Vishnukundina kings and then Jain and Buddhist monks used them.

As per the information found in the Historical records, Madhava Reddy, a subordinate under the Reddies of Kondaveedu, governed the region with the caves to the Anantha Swamy temple.

According to sources, these caves were used as the rest houses of the Buddhist monks. Caves include some shrines, dedicated to the Trimurti, Brahma, and Shiva. As a part of the rock-cut architecture of the Gupta School of Art, these caves hold significant importance for Hindus, accommodating images with the representation of Vaishnavas as most of the rulers belonging to the Gupta period were Vaishnavas. Here, visitors find various examples of Narasimha, the Ramayana, and other Vishnu stories.
