History of Gwalior Fort, Madhya Pradesh

There is no clear information available about the establishment date of the fort. However, several historical records mention its construction in 3rd C.E., built by a local king Suraj Sen. King struggled with the disease of leprosy, and with the help of a sage named Gwalipa, he could heal himself as sage provided him water from a sacred pond. Thus, as part of his gratefulness to the sage, the king established the fort. Over the years, it remained under the control of 83 descendants of Suraj Sen Pal, and later, fell into the hands of the Tomars, Mughals, Marathas, and  Scindias. During British rule, it served as the earlier province of the Maratha Kingdom, and after the independence of India, the Government of India took possession of it.
