History of Sanchi Archaeological Museum

Constructed by the then director of the Archaeological Survey of India, John Marshal, Sanchi Museum is designed to preserve artifacts found during the excavations begun in the 19th century. In the earlier phase, a small museum was built on the hill near the Great Stupa, containing items and artifacts; however, due to less space, a large museum was established in 1966, featuring extensive collections.

Scriptures that are famous in the gallery are Buddha in meditation having auspicious symbols on toes, palm, standing Buddha in varada mudra, and two large images of Nagaraja etc. Gallery 2 is separated into two parts the first part consists of miniature sculptures belonging to the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD and the second part on the right side features iron objects of the medieval period. Moreover, exhibits can be seen in the verandah and open courtyards.

The main hall features the items of six cultural periods i.e.  Shunga, Satavahana, Mauryan, Kushana, Gupta, and late Gupta periods (circa 300 BCE – -700 CE). Exclusive features of the museum are the top of the Ashoka Pillar and a bell-shaped unfolded lotus, holding four lions seated back-to-back, a stone gateway featuring Buddha’s enlightenment under a Pipal tree, a sculpture of a female goddess known as ‘yakshi’, and a red sandstone Mathura Buddha from the 4th century AD.
