History of Halebidu

Halebidu is a historical site and modern village, in south-central Karnataka state of India. Located north-northwest of the Hassan, it was established near a large artificial lake known as Dorasamudra (Dvarasamudra). It is believed it was created in the 9th century by Rashtrakutas and in the early 12th century was made a capital by Hoysalas. It garners popularity for its affluence and prosperity for over 2 centuries and in 1311 and 1326, it was plundered by Muslims.
Enclosed by a great stone wall and moat, its temples have been revived, but much of the interiors have not been excavated. The main temple in the location is Hoysaleshvara, which comprises various sculptures. After a century, the Kedareshvara temple was created.
