About Mughal Garden/Amrit Udyan, Delhi

 Built-in 1928-29, Mughal Garden Delhi accommodated East Lawn, Central Lawn, Long Garden, and Cicular Graden. Over the years, more gardens such as Herbal-I, Herbal-II, Tactile Garden, Bonsai Garden, and Arogya Vanam were created. It is adorned with a variety of flowers such as Coleus, Celosia, Tuberose, etc. 

To fulfill the food requirements of tourists, it has a food court for visitors to get refreshments and delve into the exhibitions. There is a Bal Vatika, a garden for children with the story of a 225-year-old Sheesham tree, and Four water tanks with fountains coming out of lotus created of red sandstone. In addition, Over 159  rare and endangered floral species such as tulips, daffodils, Asiatic lilies, hyacinths, etc. adorn the garden.  

Mughal Garden, Delhi Historical Significance

Also known as Amrit Graden, the Mughal Garden was constructed in 1928-29, believed to have been created by  Sir Edwin Lutyens.  Sprawled over 15 acres, it garners inspiration from the Jammu and Kashmir Mughal Gardens, gardens near the Taj Mahal, and Indian and Persian paintings. When it comes to designing aspects, William Mustoe, the director of horticulture, led the design work. Some sources mention that Lutyens and Mustoe discussed extensively to creation of two grand Mughal parks and the English flower garden. 

The Mughal garden has an International artistic touch, adorned by tulips from the Netherlands, Japanese Brazilian orchids and cherry blossoms, and Chinese water lilies, etc. In Christopher Hussey’s book “The Life of Sir Edwin Lutyens (1950)”, Lady Emily Bulwer- Lytton, expressed her admiration towards the Mughal garden’s beauty with the words “flowers are set in such masses, producing a riot of color and scents that, when, with the fountains playing continually, there is not the least sense of stiffness”. 

In 2019, there were demands raised by Hindub Sabha to rechristen the Mughal Gardens to Rajendra Prasad Udyan after the name of the first president of India, however, it was not approved. On January 28, 2023, its name was changed to Amrit Udyan by the Central Government. There are more than 70 varieties of flowers,  60 kinds of bougainvillea, and around 50 varieties of trees, shrubs, and vines available in the garden including golden rain tree, moulsiri tree, and torch tree.

Mughar Garden is embellished with various attractive things, mentioned below: 

1. Flowers: The garden is enriched with beautiful blossoming flowers, trees, and plants, making the environment colorful and vibrant.

2. Exotic touch – There are European flowerbeds, lawns, and private hedges in the garden, resembling the gardens decked in the Victorian and Elizabethan periods.

4. Roses – During spring, you can witness  159 kinds of roses bloom, including Adora, taj Mahal, Scentimental, Oklahoma or black rose, Mrinalini, Belami, Black Lady, Paradise, Blue Moon, and Lady X,  making it one of the elegant rose plantations. There are roses, named after well-known personalities like Mother Teresa, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Mr Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Jawahar, Queen Elizabeth, and Christian Dior. Some of the roses are named after the characters of Mahabharata Arjun and Bhim. 

5. Plant variations – The Mughal garden is decorated with various plants such as Asiatic lilies, Daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, etc. Moreover, there are flowers with bulbous stems and other flowers such as alyssum, daisy, pansy, etc. The grass around the plants is the doob grass taken from Calcutta. 

6. Detailed Design – Mughal canals and terraces in the garden embrace the Mughal architecture. The terraces are created using  Mughal and Persian engravings and the structure of the canals is inspired by the gardens of Agra like Mehtab Bagh and others. 

7. Trees collection – The garden has around 50 varied kinds of shrubs, vines, and trees, including the Moulsiri tree, flower-bearing torch tree, and Golden rain tree. 

8. Striking view– Through the first story of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, travelers can view the three-story garden, which includes a rectangular garden and long and circular structures, boasting different types of plants, trees, and herbs.
