Humayun’s Tomb is a stunning historical structure, located in Delhi. It is made of red sandstone with the Mughal-styled architecture. The construction was initiated by a consort of the Mughal emperor, Bega Begum, also known as Haji Begum and it was completed by Sayyid Muhammad ibn Mirak Ghiyath Ud Din in 1572.

Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi Historical Richness

The construction of the Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi began by Begum Bega aka Haji Begum, the first wife of the Mughal king Humanyu to honor him. For designing aspects, she selected Persian architect, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas who died before completing the construction. In 1565, the establishment began and was completed in 1572 under the Sayyid Muhammad ibn Mirak Ghiyath Ud Din. The cost of construction is estimated to be 1.5 million rupees, covered by Begum Bega.

Over the years, the tomb saw a decline especially in the 18th century, when colonial power took reign over Delhi, Charbagh Garden was designed in English style in 1860. Then, in the early years of the 20th century, the refurbishment of the tomb with original gardens was led by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India.

The mausoleum served huge significance during the country’s partition in 1947 when it was used as a refugee camp for migrants taking off to Pakistan. For almost five years the camps were organized here, causing harm to the structure and garden surrounding it. Later, it was resurrected and well-maintained under the authorization of the Archaeological Survey of India. 

Humayun’s Tomb Architecture

The architecture of Humayun’s Tomb resembles the Mughal style with a touch of Indo-Persian style. The design of the impressive tomb complex was led by a Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas. It is made of red sandstone and has a 154 feet height and 299 feet width. The double-layered dome is built with white marble. 

Mughal Tomb comprises 124 small vaulted chambers within its walls and is surrounded by Charbagh, the Persian-style garden with a quadrilateral layout. Besides, paved walkways, water channels, a bath chamber, and a pavilion are the exclusive features of the tomb. The tomb has two entrance gateways, one on the south and the other on the west, and around 150 tombs are inside the complex. Outside the Humayun’s complex, you can witness the shrine of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, a Sufi saint from the 14th century.

Humayun’s Tomb Site Museum is enriched with numerous attractive aspects that are mentioned below: 

• Designing aspects: The design of the museum shows similarity to baoli (stepwell) and covers a 100-seat auditorium, temporary galleries, cafés, meeting rooms, and a library. 
• Artifacts: It contains antique items like a pear-shaped water vessel belonging to Jauhar Aftabchi, Humayun’s biographer, and a helmet used by Humayun as a cooking vessel during his traveling journey to Persia. These items are on loan from the National Museum for 10 years. 
• Coins from the Mughal era: In the museum, you can witness the coins belonging to the reigns of 18 Mughal kings and the throne of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor.  Among those coins, coins from Akbar’s era with ‘Allah’ on one side and ‘Ram’ on the other, coins from Jahangir’s era, and rare coins from Bahadur Shah Zafar’s reign are available. 
• Humayun’s life interests: In the exhibits, Interests of Humayun related to travels, administration, reading, astrology, the arts, and his patronage of architecture are showcased. 
• Prominent figures: It houses 4 cultural figures hailing from the 14th-century, Nizamuddin area. These cultural figures are Sufi Saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, Poet Amir Khusrau Dehalvi, Rahim, a commander-in-chief of Akbar’s army and poet, and Dara Shukoh, popular for leading the translation of Upanishads into Persian. 
• Preservation: Under the stewardship of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the museum stands as a significant part of preservation initiatives including the 300-acre Humayun’s Tomb-Sunder Nursery-Nizamuddin Basti area. 

Monuments of Humayun’s Tomb 

Humayun Tomb is adorned with Various majestic mausoleums that are listed below: 

Nila Gumbad: 

Established by Abdul Rahim Khan-I-Khana, a courtier in Akbar’s court for his servant Miyan Fahim, NIla Gumbad is situated outside the boundary of the complex. Also known as “Blue Dome”, it is decorated with blue tiles and has a distinct structure, octagonal from the outside and square from within. 

Afsarwala Tomb and Mosque:

This tomb is situated towards the southwest end of Humayun’s tomb, and belongs to Afsarwala, a noble in Akbar’s court. It is believed that it was constructed during 1566-67 CE. 

Chillah Nizamuddin Aulia:

Chillah Nizamuddin Aulia is located inside the complex and stands as the residence of Delhi’s patron saint Nizamuddin Auliya. 

Humayun’s Barber’s Tomb:

Humayun’s Barber’s tomb is situated in the Char Bagh,  in the southeast corner. There are no confirmed details about the person it is dedicated to, however, few consider it as the final resting place of Humayun’s favorite barber.

Bu Halima’s Tomb and Garden:

Situated towards the western entry of Humayun’s tomb, there is not much information available about this Tomb publicly. 

Tomb and Mosque of Isa Khan:

This monument belongs to Isa Khan Niyazi, an Afghan noble in Sher Shah Suri’s court. He had a rivalry with the Mughals and fought against them. Having an octagonal garden in its surroundings, it was constructed during the reign of Islam Shah Suri, son of Sher ShahSuri. Here, not just Isa Khan, but his family members were also buried.
