About Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi

Humayun’s Tomb is one of the most important Mughal monuments in Delhi. Built mainly in red sandstone with white marble detailing, it was commissioned by Bega Begum, also known as Haji Begum, in memory of Emperor Humayun. The construction of the Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi began by Begum Bega aka Haji Begum, the first wife of the Mughal king Humanyu to honor him. For designing aspects, she selected Persian architect, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas who died before completing the construction. In 1565, the establishment began and was completed in 1572 under the Sayyid Muhammad ibn Mirak Ghiyath Ud Din. The cost of construction is estimated to be 1.5 million rupees, covered by Begum Bega.

Over the years, the tomb saw a decline especially in the 18th century, when colonial power took reign over Delhi, Charbagh Garden was designed in English style in 1860. Then, in the early years of the 20th century, the refurbishment of the tomb with original gardens was led by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India.

The mausoleum served huge significance during the country’s partition in 1947 when it was used as a refugee camp for migrants taking off to Pakistan. For almost five years the camps were organized here, causing harm to the structure and garden surrounding it. Later, it was resurrected and well-maintained under the authorization of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Humayun’s Tomb Architecture

The tomb complex was designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and built mainly with red sandstone and white marble. • Designing aspects: The design of the museum shows similarity to baoli (stepwell) and covers a 100-seat auditorium, temporary galleries, cafés, meeting rooms, and a library.

Nila Gumbad: 

Established by Abdul Rahim Khan-I-Khana, a courtier in Akbar’s court for his servant Miyan Fahim, NIla Gumbad is situated outside the boundary of the complex. Also known as “Blue Dome”, it is decorated with blue tiles and has a distinct structure, octagonal from the outside and square from within. 

Afsarwala Tomb and Mosque:

This tomb is situated towards the southwest end of Humayun’s tomb, and belongs to Afsarwala, a noble in Akbar’s court. It is believed that it was constructed during 1566-67 CE. 

Chillah Nizamuddin Aulia:

Chillah Nizamuddin Aulia is located inside the complex and stands as the residence of Delhi’s patron saint Nizamuddin Auliya. 

Humayun’s Barber’s Tomb:

Humayun’s Barber’s tomb is situated in the Char Bagh,  in the southeast corner. There are no confirmed details about the person it is dedicated to, however, few consider it as the final resting place of Humayun’s favorite barber.
