Know More About the Statue of Unity

About the Statue of Unity

Built in the memory of The Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Statue of Unity serves the purpose of inspiring generations with his patriotism and freedom struggle. This Bronze statue has a height of 182 meters and is the ‘Tallest statue in the World’. Dedicated to Patel’s unmatchable patriotism for India, this statue rests on the Sadhu Bet island on the Narmada facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam downstream in Kevadiya colony, situated around 100 kilometers southeast of Vadodara.

In 2010, the announcement was made regarding the initiation of the project by Narendra Modi, then Chief Minister of Gujarat, and in October 2013, construction was begun by Indian company Larsen & Toubro, with a construction cost of ₹27 billion (US$422 million). Designing aspects were led by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar and it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 October 2018, marking the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. The statue has left China’s Spring Temple Buddha behind which is 153 meters tall.

Statue of Unity Historical Richness

On 7 October 2013, the then chief minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi announced the initiation of the project, signifying the event of his tenth year as the chief minister of the state. Following this, a society named Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET) was built under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister of Gujarat for the implementation of the project. In 2013, the Statue of Unity Movement began to rack up Iron for the statue by asking for farming instruments from farmers as donations. Accordingly, a total of 135 metric tonnes of scrap iron accumulated by 2016, and about 109 tonnes were utilized to construct the Statue.

Do You know?

A marathon, termed “the Run For Unity” was organized on 15 December 2013 in Surat and Vadodara to strengthen the initiative.

Why the Statue of Unity Was Built?

Sardar Patel is the former deputy Indian prime minister who assimilated the Princely states into the Indian Republic, thus making a major contribution to the unification and consolidation of India. His dedication to integrating the British colonial provinces garnered him the title “Unifier of India’. Marking his commitment to national integration, the idea of the Statue of Unity came to life.

Statue of Unity Designing Aspects

For designing aspects of the Statue of Unity, numerous statutes of Patel were studied by historians and artists. The design was finalized by the Indian Sculptor Ram V. Sutar. The design of the Statue of Unity is an extended version of a statue of the leader available at the Ahmedabad International Airport.  Initially, three design models were crafted and after getting the approval of the largest model design, a detailed 3D scan was made, the cornerstone of the bronze cladding cast in a foundry in China.

The statue design features Patel’s dhoti-clad legs and sandalled feet, making the base of the statue thin with a slenderness ratio of 16 to 19, a higher than usual ratio of between 8 and 14 used in other tall buildings of the world. It raised the issue of stability, addressed by mass dampers. The statue can bear winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour (110 mph) and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale. This massive structure’s total height is 240 m (790 ft), including a base height of 58 m (190 ft) and the statue’s height of 182 m (597 ft.). The statue’s height of 182 meters was particularly fixed to align with the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.

  • Wide Area: Built on a river island named Sadhu Bet, 3.2 km (2.0 mi) away from mainland and facing the Narmada Dam downstream, the SOU statue is spread over an extensive area of 2 hectares (4.9 acres).
